Candles in an Orthodox Church symbolizes Christ who said “I am the light of the world; He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). Orthodox Church ceremonies use different types of candles for different occasions like weddings, baptism, funerals, etc.
The reasons for the use of candles
Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite has laid down six primary reasons for the candles on the altar candelabra in an Orthodox Church. The first reason is to glorify God, who is the light of the world. Secondly, candles on Orthodox candelabra are lit to dispel darkness and the fear it brings. Thirdly, a candle is lit to reflect the joy of our inner souls. Fourthly, it is an homage to early saints of the Church. Fifthly, the lighting of candles symbolizes good works. Lastly, the burning of candles is an act of seeking forgiveness for one’s own sins and the sins of those prayed for.
The symbolic representation of candles
According to Saint Symeon of Thessalonik, the candles on Orthodox candelabra are symbolic of six things. Firstly, they remind everyone entering the church to keep their hearts pure as the pure beeswax with which the candles are made. Secondly, the supple candles calls believers to make their hearts supple to the teachings of the Word of God. Thirdly, just like the candles on the altar candelabra are aromatic, the souls of believers should be aromatic of the Divine Grace. Fourthly, as the candle burns to feed the flames, the struggles of life will help achieve theosis. Fifthly, just as a candle dispels darkness, believers should shine forth with the light of Christ. Lastly, as a candle lights up the way, not for itself, but for another, Christians should be a light of love and peace in other’s lives.
Candles during Easter week- an example
The use of candles is best demonstrated during the Easter week. Candles with red cups are lit as the congregation awaits midnight to befall them. Right before midnight, the church is darkened to symbolize Christ’s tomb and a solitary oil candle is brought outside by the priest from the holy altar. This candle is passed among the people at midnight and the tomb is carried out and around the building of the church with a procession of people with lit candles following.
